Hoewel de GoPro Hero5 veel van dezelfde specificaties heeft als de vorige generatie als het gaat om video- en fotoresoluties, zitten er enkele nieuwe functies in. Individueel is geen enkele functie een enorme sprong voorwaarts in de action cam-industrie, maar gezamenlijk vertegenwoordigen ze een opmerkelijk en substantieel verschil met de Hero4 Black. Deze sectie is vooral gericht op deze nieuwe functies, terwijl de overige secties dieper ingaan op de kernfuncties van de camera en deze nieuwe functies in meer detail bespreken.
Volledig waterdicht: Waarschijnlijk het meest opvallende item is dat de GoPro Hero5 Black nu volledig waterdicht is zonder dat er een aparte behuizing nodig is, net zoals de GoPro Hero4 Session dat was. In feite heeft het bijna hetzelfde rubberachtige materiaal aan de buitenkant.
Wat echter zorgwekkender is, is de USB-C/HDMI-poortdeur. Deze deur kan worden geopend om in de Karma gimbal/drone te worden geplaatst, maar ook om op te laden:

Nu zal dit niet gemakkelijk loskomen terwijl het op zijn plaats is vergrendeld, omdat je een knop naar beneden moet drukken om het te openen (en te verschuiven). Maar de truc is om hem niet kwijt te raken na het opladen van je camera of terwijl de oplaadkabel is aangesloten. GoPro verkoopt de deur als accessoire (hoewel te duur), en ik weet dat ik van plan ben een extra deur te kopen en deze vervolgens op een speciale plek in mijn rugzak/koffer te verzegelen voor op reis. Omdat ik je garandeer dat ik het op het meest ongelegen moment zal verliezen tijdens een reis naar een prachtige waterige locatie en dat ik niet in staat zal zijn om onderwaterfoto’s te maken van The Girl in bikini zonder de deur.
Over deuren gesproken die we niet open willen hebben: we hebben ook het batterijcompartiment eronder. Daar zitten zowel de batterij als de micro-SD-kaart in:
Touch Display:
De Hero5 neemt het aanraakscherm van de Hero4 Silver en schuift het naar voren. Zoals je je misschien herinnert, had de Hero4 Black eigenlijk geen display. Dit was een van de redenen dat de Hero4 Silver eigenlijk meer mijn dagelijkse favoriet was dan de Hero4 Black.

Het volledige menusysteem is vernieuwd om het vinden van instellingen intuïtiever te maken. Onderaan ziet u de basisprincipes van die modus. In de videomodus toont het bijvoorbeeld de resolutie en framesnelheid.
U kunt erop tikken om deze specificaties te wijzigen. Alleen de beschikbare framesnelheden worden weergegeven voor een bepaalde resolutie. In theorie ziet dit er mooi uit, maar in de praktijk is het eigenlijk omslachtiger dan ik had verwacht. Ik denk dat dit komt omdat er gewoon te veel resoluties zijn die zo dicht bij elkaar liggen dat een vinger van normaal formaat de juiste resolutie op dat kleine scherm kan bereiken.
Aan de rechterkant van het display kun je verschillende geavanceerde instellingen voor die modus inschakelen, zoals ProTune, Beeldstabilisatie en Audiobediening:
Vanaf de bovenkant heb je toegang tot algemene camera-instellingen zoals wifi-connectiviteit en stembesturing. En vanaf de linkerkant heeft u toegang tot de afspeelpagina’s om de foto’s en video’s die u hebt gemaakt te bekijken. Ik bespreek dit allemaal in detail in deze video hieronder:
Over een nat scherm gesproken, over het algemeen vond ik dat het ook niet goed werkt als het nat is. Vooral als je vingers nat zijn, gaat het allemaal mis en reageert het niet.
Zoals ik al eerder zei, ziet de nieuwe lay-out van het GoPro Hero5 Black-aanraakscherm er in theorie goed uit, maar in de praktijk heeft het wat meer verfijning nodig. Ik ontdekte dat de overgrote meerderheid van de tijd, terwijl ik probeerde van modus te veranderen, de kleine weergavevertraging in combinatie met kleine optiekiezers veel gemiste pogingen betekende om dingen te configureren.
Voice Control:
Net als de VIRB Ultra 30 introduceerde ook GoPro dit najaar stembediening. Dit betekent dat je eenvoudigweg tegen je camera kunt zeggen: “GoPro, Start Recording”, en hij zal inderdaad beginnen met opnemen. Hetzelfde geldt voor foto’s en zelfs voor het wijzigen van de modus. Je kunt zelfs een krachtterm zweren die rijmt op ‘hit’ en het zal daar een hoogtepunt markeren. Het is cool.
Je kunt deze optie in- of uitschakelen en is beschikbaar in zeven talen. Als u de Remo-afstandsbediening heeft, accepteert deze ook spraakopdrachten als de camera buiten het bereik van uw stem is.
Maar… het is niet perfect. Ik heb gemerkt dat het meestal werkt als je stilstaat. Maar zodra je begint te bewegen, merkte ik dat zowel het apparaat als de Hero5 Session eigenlijk slechter presteren dan Garmin. Bij ongeveer 10 MPH (15 km/u) merk ik dat de mogelijkheid om opdrachten te geven vrijwel verdwijnt, ongeacht in welke richting de camera is gericht. Terwijl het bij Garmin boven die snelheid blijft werken zolang de camera naar je toe gericht is.
Je zult dus zien dat GoPro meer functionaliteit (opdrachten) heeft dan Garmin. En uit eerder gelekte handleidingen in augustus bleek zelfs dat GoPro nieuwe commando’s kon leren die je hem toewijst (dat is nog niet gebeurd… maar dat zou supercool zijn). Maar in gebruik werkt de Garmin eigenlijk beter als je begint te bewegen, en er zijn minder mislukte opdrachten.
GPS & Sensors:
De Hero5 Black bevat GPS. Maar die GPS doet niets voor je. Kijk, de GPS op de Hero5 Black wordt alleen gebruikt om de locatie van uw foto’s en video’s te geotaggen. In wezen doet het wat Facebook en Instagram met je telefoon doen door te zeggen ‘Je was hier’ toen je deze foto maakte. Het wordt NIET gebruikt om uw GPS-tracks vast te leggen terwijl u fiets/ski/surft/enz.. Het wordt ook NIET gebruikt om uw snelheid op video’s weer te geven. Kortom, het wordt nergens voor gebruikt, behalve om te zeggen: “Dit is genomen in NYC”.
Dit is duidelijk een enorme teleurstelling voor sportfans die gegevens zoals snelheid of afstand over hun video’s heen wilden leggen en dat allemaal native binnen de GoPro-suite wilden doen. GoPro heeft tenslotte Dashware gekocht, de toonaangevende app voor het overlappen van dergelijke statistieken. Toch zijn er op dit moment harde bonen voor elk gebruik. Het GPS-tagging-pictogram wordt links bovenaan het scherm weergegeven:
Electronic Image Stabilization, RAW Photos, Advanced Audio Tracks: I’m bucketing all three of these together, not because they deserve to be together, but because I want to call them out here before I dive into them more deeply down below. These are in many ways some of the biggest differences between the Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session. While the Hero5 Session does have stabilization, it does not have the new RAW photo mode, nor does it have the Advanced Audio Track capability.
Speaking of which, let’s talk audio and video modes.
Video & Audio details
Ahh yes, video time. No better place to start diving into features than video modes. In many ways the Hero5 is similar in these modes to the Hero4 Black. After all, it too has 4K @ 30FPS and 720P @ 240FPS, the two ends of the spectrum that people often talk about. The footage looks beautiful in 4K – no doubt.
So what’s new and notable here? Well we’ll start with the video stabilization. Technically this is ‘electronic image stabilization’, which works by taking a larger resolution video clip (i.e. 4K) and then smoothing the video by offering a reduced resolution rate while stabilized (up to 2.7K). By doing this it essentially stabilizes by cutting the edges off the corners to make the video appear smooth. It’s the same thing that Garmin does on their VIRB Ultra 30 (but the Garmin is limited to 1440 vs the higher 2.7K), but is different than what Sony does with their new X3000R, where they use optical image stabilization. That’s better because it doesn’t crop any of the image.
For cases where you’ve got some light chop in the roadway, or even for hand holding the unit, image stabilization can dramatically improve things. Though, that’s at the sacrifice of resolution. If your final output product’s 1080p, then it’s largely a no-brainer. Do note that it generally works better when you’re shooting something that has a large portion of the image facing one direction constantly. Versus on a helmet mount, it can get a bit wonky as you move the view around a bunch.
What’s even more interesting though is the ability to record the native audio files from each microphone separately. If you enable ProTune, you’ll see a new option to do this. Within that you have three levels:
Here’s some quick tests that I’ve done with just straight recording times:
1080p 30FPS (Wide): 2:07:41 (no WiFi/GPS), 1:50:52 (WiFi/GPS enabled)
2.7K 30FPS (Wide): 1:45:05 (with WiFi Enabled)
4K 30FPS (Wide): 1:31:10 (with WiFi enabled)
All of these were simply taken at room temperature; obviously aspects like environmental temperature will impact things considerably, as will other modes and increased frame rates. But those give you some basic bounds to work within.
Photo mode:
While the Hero5 Black doesn’t offer any more resolution than the Hero4 Black did, it does offer a number of substantial photo-focused features. First, the basics though. To get into the photo mode you’ll go ahead and tap the mode button until you see photos. Or, just tell the GoPro to take a photo using voice commands.
Now there are technically different photo modes, including the ability to take a burst photo, a series of photos as a timelapse, or night photos. Note that this photo timelapse is separate from the video timelapse option. This produces a crapton of photo files, whereas the video timelapse produces a single video timelapse file.
Within the photo mode you can change resolution, as well as perspective. Resolution is set to 12MP. While perspective options are Wide, Linear, Medium, and Narrow. The linear one is the most notable new one, which aims to reduce the fisheye effect seen on many action cams. To understand these differences, here’s a sample gallery of the different modes:
The burst mode allows you to capture a moment of action with up to 30 frames per second. You can also configure it to have those frames spread out over a few seconds too:
HERO5 BLACK VS HERO5 SESSION:
So you’re trying to choose between the Hero5 Black and the Hero5 Session. Both solid choices, and let me give you some food for thought on deciding between the two (the next section I talk about between the Hero5 Black vs the Garmin VIRB Ultra 30). Do note I’m specifically talking here about the $299USD Hero5 Session, and *NOT* the cheaper $199 Hero Session, which lacks a ton of features compared to the $299 Hero5 Session. The key visible difference being the lack of the numeral ‘5’ in the Hero Session name.
From a top-line standpoint, here’s what the Hero5 Black has that the Hero5 Session lacks:
- 12MP instead of 10MP pictures on Session
- GPS for location stamping
- Inability to swap out battery (it’s not removable)
- RAW photo option
- WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) photo option
- Higher slow-mo specs (240fps on Black vs 120fps on Session)
- A handful less frame-rate options
- Touch display on the back (no display at all)
- Three mics vs two mics on Hero5 Session
- Ability to record individual audio streams
- HDMI port for direct viewing/connection options
You’ll still get all this stuff on the Hero5 Session though:

That’s the basic differences. Again, both cameras are very good, you won’t go wrong with either. For me, I prefer the Hero5 Black because I like to be able to see and frame up what I’m taking a photo/video of. Whereas the Hero5 Session it’s shoot and pray that you’ve got it lined up. Sure, you can use your phone for certain shots – but most of us won’t do that.
